If you are on my blog then I imagine you have been dabbling in yoga and healthy living for awhile… Or at least you are interested in these things. What I really want to share with you today is the truth I discovered through 20 years of practicing yoga and pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
I started yoga when I was 18 years old and in college. I was looking for some solace after losing my mom to a quick but ugly battle with cancer. I had no idea at that time how yoga would become the very foundation of my life’s work; I just wanted to feel better. And somehow the stretching and breathing did make me feel a little better. Yet I knew deep down that there must be more to the story. So I devoured everything I could find on yoga and living a yogic life. I became a vegetarian overnight, pierced my nose and listened to sitar (hey, I thought it made me look spiritual). I started guzzling green juice and pretending to meditate, I even studied Sanskrit on the days I wasn’t bogged down with my actual University work. I traveled to India 5 times. I did it all. At least I thought I was doing it all. Yet I still felt like a fraud. I still felt easily irritated and impatient, I was really tired and suffered from insomnia, I tried to be a good meditator but my back hurt and I would get sleepy, I was a vegetarian but living mostly on pasta and French fries (potatoes are a vegetable aren’t they?). Over the years I invested thousands and thousands of dollars (not exaggerating – ask my husband) on my yoga education. I thought if I could just take another course, go on another retreat, do one more teacher-training then maybe – just maybe – I would be more “Zen” and have that yoga glow I saw in the magazines and then I wouldn’t feel like a phony anymore. It took me many years and a lot of trial and error to discover the secrets to actually experiencing deep peace, openness, vitality, infinite energy and more presence that yoga had always promised. And the answers were not found in any of those retreats, magazines, or fancy green juices.

The truth is that to really receive the deep healing, bountiful energy, and meditative calm that yoga promises us, we need to do much more than roll out our sticky mat twice a week and sing OM. We need to learn the yoga habits off the mat that can bring our bodies into deeper alignment with nature. Our potential to experience all that yoga really is will require some simple but profound shifts in the way we eat, sleep, and live our daily lives.
I want to share with you the secrets I discovered during my 20 years of deep study and practice of yoga, Ayurveda, meditation and healthy living. I was standing on my head, pounding kale, and singing Om long before there was a yoga studio and juice bar on every corner. I am passionately devoted to helping as many people as possible awaken to what is truly possible through a yogic lifestyle – off the mat. This lifestyle is possible and highly transformational whether you ever do a downward dog or not. There are deep Universal principles of nature that we can align with to create the peace, health, presence, and purpose that we are hoping to gain through yoga. Doing the poses is not enough.
