Detox is such a buzzword now that I can’t take it anymore! Somebody please…make it stop!
Detox is trendy like yoga, green juice, Lululemon and gluten free.
The problem with these trends they happen to all be things I actually really love and believe in. I just loathe their trendiness. The problem with these trends is how cliché they make my healthy yoga loving lifestyle appear to be. Never mind that I’ve been living this way since George Bush was in office. No silly, Bush senior. Yep.
The word detox gets thrown around lightly and often inappropriately. In my (not so humble) opinion, “detox” has become an overused and abused code word for “crash diet.” And I hate diets and don’t believe in them. I have never been on one that actually worked or made me feel anything other than miserable and less-than. And see, I am all about pleasure, not deprivation. Ask anyone who knows me. I’m Taurus for cryin’ out loud.
Your body was designed to detoxify naturally. That is the primary function of your kidneys and liver! The human body is a miraculous machine that can process and eliminate some pretty nasty stuff! And it does so, on a daily basis. We are naturally equipped with a highly effective detox system. But we live in crazy times! When the detox organs are overwhelmed or undernourished, toxins cannot be processed or properly eliminated. Build-up of chemicals causes irritation, inflammation, and illness. So a detox by definition then is taking a break from all the toxins that may be overloading your system and preventing your organs from doing their job effectively. It is also a time of deep nourishment and rest not only for the body, but for the mind and soul too.
So let’s exchange the word “detox” for “rejuvenation” shall we?
Think of a rejuvenation as “eating only the highest quality, nutrient dense foods to feel gorgeous and amazing and fabulous like the diva you are, sleep like a baby and wake up each day feeling ready and able to rule the world.”
Because that is basically what it is.
Now while I don’t believe in deprivation, diets or the abuse of the word “detox”, I DO want to thrive and I want my students and friends to thrive too! I am so sad when people just feel kind of mediocre in life. I see it all the time! Almost everyone I know complains of low energy, poor digestion, stress, belly bloat, and suffers from headaches and the infamous afternoon slump. Here is the thing – while that may appear to be normal since pretty much everyone in modern society feels like that –It doesn’t have to be that way!
You can actually wake up feeling amazing the great majority of the time! But it takes a strategy. And it takes a desire and commitment to rise above status quo.
To create a deeper state of radiant beauty and thrive without the deprivation of a diet or detox, I believe in special periods of time each season where I focus on eating an abundance of the cleanest most nutritionally packed foods while “crowding out” the foods that make me feel like a tired, moody, fat blob. For me, the foods that I often crave but that just don’t make me feel the way I want to feel include sugar, gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine and soy. These tend to be toxic triggers for majority of the population. I know, I know. But it’s true.
Notice I said I do this for a period of time – not ALL of the time! By rejuvenating my body and taking conscious breaks from some of these goodies a few times a year, I am able to eradicate any gunk that might be clogging my channels so I feel energized, light, clear, and more beautiful. And then by some magical act of God, my cravings for those things actually completely dissolve. Except when they don’t. But then I am able to have a soy latte or glass of wine once in awhile without it taking a big toll on my system – because my system has been rejuvenated and reset in a consistent manner seasonally for a very long time.
This is one of the main perks of a focused rejuvenation period. You really gain a lot of insight about which foods energize you and what depletes you. You will discover unknown food sensitivities and learn what fuel your unique body requires to have radiant beauty and vibrant health.
